La Cuvette Beach: North Mauritius’ Secret Cove of Calm and Charm

La Cuvette Beach Guide: North Mauritius’ Secret Cove of Calm and Charm

Tucked discreetly between Grand Baie and the bustling resorts of the north coast, La Cuvette Beach is a true hidden gem of Mauritius. Ask any local—this small but enchanting cove is a favourite for its peaceful waters, shady trees, and easygoing spirit.

Where to Stay Near La Cuvette Beach

What Makes La Cuvette Beach Special

La Cuvette stands apart from the long, sprawling beaches of the north. It’s a compact spot with soft sand and a mix of shady filaos and screw pines. Surrounded by rocky outcroppings, it feels secluded, yet you’re still just a short stroll from the heart of Grand Baie. Many locals love it for its intimacy and calm atmosphere. The water here is superb for swimming and, on most days, you can wade or float in a perfect lagoon with gentle lapping waves.

Best Time to Visit

  • Season: La Cuvette shines year-round but is especially pleasant from May to September, when the north is at its driest and sunniest. Peak summer (December-March) brings more locals and visitors, especially on weekends.
  • Time of day: Arrive in the morning for a quiet swim and empty sands. Late afternoon brings golden light for those Instagrammable sunset moments but you’ll share the cove with more picnickers.
  • Pro tip: Avoid late Sunday afternoons—the cove gets crowded with local families and the nearby parking fills up fast.

Water Conditions: Swimming, Snorkeling & Safety

The turquoise lagoon at La Cuvette is mostly calm with gentle waves, protected by the outer reef. The sandy bottom slopes gradually, making it friendly for kids and less confident swimmers. Snorkeling is possible around the rocky edges, where you may spot small fish and colourful crabs, but it’s not as rewarding as bigger sites like Trou aux Biches or Pereybere. There are no lifeguards, so always supervise children and only swim inside the bay, not too close to the rocks.

Facilities: What to Expect

  • Parking: There’s a small paved lot right next to the beach, but it fills up quickly on weekends and holidays. Arriving early or late can make all the difference.
  • Toilets: Clean public restroom facilities are available, better maintained than many on the island.
  • Food & drinks: During the day, you’ll often find local snack vendors selling Mauritian favourites like gateaux piments (chili cakes), samosas, and drinks. For a sit-down meal, LUX* Grand Baie and numerous Grand Baie restaurants are less than 10 minutes’ walk away.

Activities at La Cuvette Beach

  • Swimming & Floating: The main draw here is pure, easy lagoon time. The gentle entry and usually glassy water make it superb for casual swimming.
  • Picnics: Bring a sarong, order some street food, and make the most of shaded areas under the trees—one of my favourite ways to spend a lazy North coast day.
  • Snorkeling: Don’t expect coral gardens, but with a mask you can spot small tropical fish along the rocks.
  • Photography & Sunset Watching: The rocky flanks and sailboats dotting the bay set up classic Mauritian photo ops, especially at sunset.
  • Jogging & Walks: Combine your visit with a stroll into Grand Baie or along the coastal road for people-watching.

How to Get There

  • By car: From Port Louis, head north via the M2, then take the B13 coastal road towards Grand Baie. La Cuvette is signposted between Royal Palm Hotel and LUX* Grand Baie. There’s a small entrance off the main road—look for the signs just after the Royal Palm.
  • By bus: All northbound buses to Grand Baie pass close by. Get off at the “La Cuvette” or Royal Palm stops and walk five minutes to the beach gate.
  • By foot: From central Grand Baie, it’s a pleasant 10–15-minute stroll via the coastal promenade towards the north.

Insider Tips from a Local

  • Check the water for sea urchins near rocks before wading at the edges—but the central sandy lagoon is usually clear.
  • On weekdays, you may share this cove with just a handful of locals—ideal for peaceful reading or an uncrowded swim.
  • The best golden-hour sun happens on the west side of the bay—my pick for a romantic picnic or couples’ sunset selfie.
  • When the wind picks up and bigger northern beaches get choppy (like Mont Choisy), La Cuvette’s sheltered cove often stays surprisingly calm.
  • If you’re worried about valuables, review our Grand Baie beach safety tips for peace of mind.
