If you’re planning to experience the wonders of Mauritius for your next holiday, it’s important to be aware of the strict rules currently in place regarding electronic cigarettes. Following recent remarks in the National Assembly by the Minister of Health and Wellness, Anil Bachoo, authorities have confirmed that the enforcement of the vaping ban is intensifying drastically across the island.
Why the Regulations Matter
While Mauritius has regulated the use of electronic cigarettes since 2008—initially limiting them to strict personal use—these products have been completely banned since 2023 under the Public Health (Restrictions on Tobacco Products) Regulations 2022.
Mauritian legislation now classifies vapes as electronic nicotine (or non-nicotine) delivery systems. Whether you use disposable or rechargeable models, all are prohibited without distinction. Local authorities are deploying significant resources, combining reinforced controls and awareness campaigns, to curb the use of these devices and protect public health.

What Tourists Should Know
For travellers, the message is clear: do not bring electronic cigarettes or vaping liquids in your luggage. The enforcement of this ban relies on a close collaboration between the Mauritius Revenue Authority (MRA), public health and food safety inspectors, and the police.
Arrivals at the airport are particularly monitored. Authorities use luggage scanners, thorough examinations of freight and parcels, and targeted physical checks. The numbers speak for themselves:
- In 2025, 27,443 passengers were checked upon arrival, leading to the seizure and destruction of 4,927 vaping devices and accessories.
- From January 1 to April 16, 2026, an additional 7,142 passengers have already been inspected, resulting in the interception of 1,155 units.
Respecting Local Laws
Choosing responsible travel also means fully respecting the laws of your destination. The controls don’t stop at customs: regular operations are carried out across the island to monitor local shops. In 2025, 1,280 businesses were inspected, and operations are actively continuing in 2026 to ensure no establishment circumvents the law.
By leaving your vaping devices at home, you ensure a smooth passage through customs and avoid the confiscation of your belongings at the airport. Mauritius remains committed to health and wellness, guaranteeing a safe and healthy environment for both its residents and visitors.
