The week kicks off with dynamic conditions as Cyclone GRANT makes its closest approach to our island this morning. While the center remains at a safe distance, we are definitely feeling its influence through gusty winds and increased humidity.
Mauritius weather Forecast in Detail
Cyclone GRANT is currently traversing the region North of Mauritius. Its closest point of passage is occurring between 06:00 AM and 08:00 AM, at a distance ranging from 388km to 404km to our North/North-North-West. Consequently, the wind is the main factor today: it is blowing from the East-North-East at an average of 28 km/h, but gusts on high grounds can reach up to 70 km/h.
Cloud bands coming from the North-East are crossing the island this morning, bringing high humidity and instability. Even the Northern coast carries a risk of rain around 07:00 AM. Throughout the day, scattered showers are possible, mainly on the Central Plateau and parts of the North. However, rainfall figures are not expected to be alarming, ranging between 4mm and 11mm for the next 24 hours.
Sea conditions are rough in exposed areas. While waves on the reefs in the West are around 1.3 meters, they reach 2 meters in the North. From the East to the South, the sea is rougher with waves reaching 2.5 meters. High tide is at 13:48, with low tides at 07:45 and 20:23.
Weather Outlook: Rodrigues and St. Brandon
Rodrigues remained dry last night. Today, light rain is possible around 07:00 AM in the East and near Grande Montagne. The wind there averages 35 km/h from the East, with 2-meter waves in the open sea. St. Brandon, however, is facing severe weather. A secondary active cloud band formed around 03:00 AM, currently dumping extra heavy rain and thunderstorms on the archipelago.
Cyclone Watch: GRANT and Future JENNA
At 06:00 AM, GRANT was centered at 15.8° South and 57.2° East, moving West-South-West at 24 km/h. Its convective clouds are shifting towards the South-South-West. Meanwhile, far away in the Australian region (11.7°S, 97.1°E), a low-pressure system has intensified into a Tropical Storm. Moving East-South-East at 25 km/h, it is likely to be named JENNA tomorrow. Forecasts suggest it will soon turn Westward for a long journey.
It is a breezy start to the week, so hold onto your hats if you are in the high grounds!
