It is Friday, the 2nd of January, and after a mostly calm start to the year, the atmosphere is shifting slightly. While yesterday was pleasant across most of the island, the night brought some scattered showers. Today, we expect a classic mix of morning clouds followed by a beautiful sunny afternoon.
Mauritius Weather in Detail
During the night, while most areas remained dry, we recorded localized rainfall. Rivière du Rempart saw 1.5 mm, while the higher grounds of Grand Bassin received 3.5 mm.
For today, the weather scenario starts with cloud bands coming in from the South-East. This will result in cloudy skies over the Eastern and Southern regions this morning, with a risk of light rain, though accumulation figures are expected to be insignificant. Once these cloud bands pass, the sky will clear, and the rest of the day will be sunny.
The wind is blowing from the South-East at a moderate average speed of 20 km/h. Sea conditions require attention depending on your location. In the West, waves on the reefs are around 1.2 meters. In the North, they reach 1.5 meters outside the reefs. However, from the East to the South, the sea is rougher with waves between 2 meters and 2.3 meters beyond the reefs. Tides are: Low at 05:46 and 18:31, High at 11:52.
Outlook for Rodrigues and Agalega
In Rodrigues, Plaine Corail recorded 3.5 mm of rain yesterday. Today’s weather there will be influenced by an instability line combined with outer cloud bands from GRANT. Expect a mostly overcast day with a risk of rain accumulation up to 10 mm. The wind is stronger there, averaging 36 km/h, and is expected to pick up further tomorrow. Open sea waves are reaching 2.5 meters.
Cyclone Watch: GRANT
GRANT has continued to lose intensity and has been downgraded to a Moderate Tropical Storm. At 06:00 AM, it was positioned at 15.9° South and 67.1° East. It is currently moving West at a slow pace of 6 km/h, with a tendency to turn West-North-West.
Distance check: It is located 580 km North-East of Rodrigues and 1090 km North-East of Mauritius. It poses no direct threat to either island. However, as it passes closest to us on Sunday, January 4th (at a distance of roughly 400 km to 500 km North of Mauritius), its outer cloud bands might bring us some rainfall.
The weekend is just around the corner, and the weather looks promising once the morning clouds clear. Stay safe on the roads and enjoy your Friday!
