Mauritius Weather – Heavy Rain Alert and Flood Risks (Dec 30)

As we approach the very end of the year, the atmosphere over our island has become incredibly volatile. We are facing a day defined by high humidity and atmospheric instability, which has already triggered significant rainfall overnight and threatens to bring even heavier downpours today. It is a day to be extremely vigilant, especially if you live or travel in the North-Western regions.

The weather was already active last night. After midnight, an instability line brought heavy rain to areas like Vacoas, Le Morne, Quatre Bornes, and Rivière Noire. This morning, active clouds are forming over the Central Plateau, specifically around Quartier Militaire, bringing a risk of thunderstorms.

However, the primary concern for this morning lies in the North-West. A massive cloud cluster is developing in that direction and is intensifying by the hour. From 6:30 AM to 7:00 AM, regions such as Port Louis, Pointe aux Sables, Albion, and up to Triolet are at risk of extra heavy rainfall and thunderstorms. This intense period could last for about 3 hours. While there might be temporary breaks where the weather clears up slightly, the relief will be short-lived. The risk of heavy rain increases again in the afternoon and evening. Given the saturated conditions, we are looking at a high probability of heavy rain continuing tonight and tomorrow, leading to a genuine flood risk for tomorrow. To give you context, several towns in Reunion Island are expected to exceed 100mm of rain today.

The wind is light, blowing from the North at an average speed of 13 km/h. Surprisingly, the sea remains practicable with waves ranging between 1 meter and 1.4 meters. High tides are at 09:18 AM and 10:17 PM, with low tide at 04:02 PM.

Meanwhile, Cyclone Grant remains a beast in the ocean. At 5:00 AM, it was located at 14.3 South and 78.0 East, moving South-West at a brisk 25 km/h. Grant remains an Intense Tropical Cyclone, generating maximum gusts of 280 km/h at sea and whipping up phenomenal waves of 10.2 meters.
