Mauritius Weather – Humid Boxing Day with Scattered Thunderstorms (December 26)

Good morning to everyone on this Friday, December 26, 2025. As we celebrate Boxing Day, the tropical atmosphere is making its presence felt with high humidity and variable conditions. While the festive spirit continues, the weather today is a bit unstable, reminding us that we are in the peak of summer. If you have outdoor plans or family gatherings today, it is wise to keep an umbrella handy, especially if you are located in the central or eastern parts of the island.

This morning began with cloud bands approaching from the East. Around 6:15 AM, rain started affecting regions like Rivière du Rempart, Flacq, and Bel Air, before spreading towards the Central Plateau and the South. For the first half of the day, the Eastern half of the island can expect overcast skies with frequent showers.

As the day progresses, the combination of heat and humidity will drive local cloud formation. By the afternoon, there is a distinct risk of thunderstorms and rain showers, particularly in towns such as Vacoas, and Curepipe. Forecasts estimate rainfall figures between 4mm and 16mm in these localities. It is worth noting that some clouds forming close to Mauritius hold the potential for up to 50mm of rain, so isolated heavy downpours are possible.

The wind is blowing from the East at a gentle average speed of 16 km/h. Sea conditions vary by coast: the West and North remain calmer with waves between 1 meter and 1.4 meters on the reefs. The East and South, however, are rougher, with waves ranging from 1.7 meters to 2.2 meters. High tides are at 04:36 AM and 04:25 PM, with low tides at 10:28 AM and 11:05 PM.

Over on Rodrigues, Pointe Canon recorded 11.5mm of rain yesterday. While the massive cloud clusters carrying up to 200mm of rain fortunately stayed to the East, the risk has not entirely vanished. Today, active clouds may form nearby, potentially bringing heavy rainfall to the island again. It is also quite windy there, with average speeds of 35 km/h and gusts reaching 60 km/h.

Regarding Cyclone Grant: The system continues its journey Westwards at 14 km/h. At 6:00 AM, it was located at 12.2 South and 92.9 East, which is approximately 3830 km North-East of Mauritius (and 3240 km from Rodrigues). It is expected to enter our monitoring area tonight, at which point the Mauritius and Reunion meteorological services will track it officially. Currently, dry air is preventing it from intensifying rapidly. While it will likely strengthen as it moves closer in the coming days, it is currently far away and struggling against environmental factors. We will keep watching it calmly.
