Good morning to everyone on this festive day, December 24, 2025!! 🙂 The long-awaited Christmas Eve is here, though nature has decided to show us its moodier, more introspective side today. Before we dive into the details of today’s weather, I must share important news from afar: the Australian Bureau of Meteorology has officially named the system heading towards our region. Cyclone Grant has been born.
Unfortunately, we cannot expect bright sunshine on Mauritius today. The island’s weather is determined by cloud bands arriving from the East, as well as high-altitude cloud cover streaming in from Madagascar, covering the entire sky. Rain may fall in some places from early morning, and in the capital, Port Louis, the chance of precipitation increases significantly after 11:00 AM. Here, we can expect 12 mm of rain, while on a national level, amounts between 4 mm and 20 mm are forecast.
Sea conditions are moderate today. On the West and North coasts, waves on the reefs are 1.5 meters, while in the East and South, open sea waves range between 1.8 and 2.2 meters. High tides occur at 03:04 AM and 14:47 PM.
Cyclone Grant deserves special attention. The system is currently located southwest of Indonesia, at latitude 12.1 South and longitude 98.7 East. It is moving West at a speed of 6 km/h and is already generating 4.2-meter waves at its core. Meteorological analyses suggest its structure is eerily similar to the infamous Cyclone Freddy: small in diameter but capable of explosive intensification. Calculations indicate it could reach our region by early January, but it is expected to avoid the island.
Looking ahead, a wetter period is expected between December 30 and January 2 on Mauritius, particularly in the Eastern half of the island.
On our neighboring island, Rodrigues, 1.8 mm of rain fell yesterday. Today, relatively acceptable weather is expected there, with winds blowing from the South-East at 28 km/h. However, it is a good idea to keep celebrations under a roof, as from tomorrow until December 27, active clouds associated with an unstable zone will reach the island, bringing rain. The sea there has waves of 2 meters.
I wish pleasant Christmas preparations and a happy Christmas Eve to all!
