Mauritius Weather – Windy Conditions and Afternoon Rain Risks (Dec 23)

With Christmas Eve just around the corner, the atmosphere on the island is buzzing with activity. The weather, playing its part in our tropical daily life, offers a mix of conditions today. While yesterday was relatively calm—with only 2mm of rain recorded in Beau Bassin and 1mm in Grand Bassin—today brings slightly more dynamic weather patterns, especially as the day progresses.

This morning, we are experiencing a breeze from the East-South-East starting at 18 km/h, but be prepared, as this is expected to strengthen throughout the day to an average of 25 km/h. Generally, the weather will be decent before noon, although clouds drifting from the East might push towards the North. Consequently, the region of Rivière du Rempart could see some showers amounting to about 3mm before midday.

The afternoon, however, tells a different story. Clouds are expected to form over the Western and North-Western halves of the island, bringing a definite risk of rain. Rainfall figures in these areas are estimated to range between 4mm and 19mm. The capital, Port Louis, is also at risk of showers this afternoon. Looking slightly ahead for holiday planning: there is a risk of heavy rain around Flacq tomorrow (Dec 24) at approximately 18:00. Furthermore, between December 27 and 31, and potentially extending to January 1, a rainy and stormy zone may affect us, bringing risks of heavy downpours.

Sea conditions are becoming rougher today. In the South, waves are reaching 2.5 meters outside the reefs. The East sees waves of 2.2 meters, while the West has 1.7 meters and the North 1.5 meters. High tide is at 2:07 PM, with low tides at 08:04 AM and 08:48 PM. Sunrise was at 05:28 AM and sunset will be at 06:49 PM.

Over on Rodrigues, Plaine Corail received a nice amount of rain yesterday (6.7mm). Today, the South might get some light rain. Although there are scattered clouds nearby with a capacity of holding up to 40mm of rain, they will likely discharge heavily over the open sea and miss the island. However, forecast models indicate that on December 26 and 27, clouds with a massive capacity (over 100mm) could develop very close to Rodrigues, posing a risk of significant rainfall. The sea is rough, rising from 2 meters this morning to 2.5 meters in the afternoon.

Regarding the long-term cyclone outlook: A system is currently evolving far away (4590 km) to the North-East at coordinates 12.6 South and 99.9 East. While gusts there have reached 91 km/h, numerical weather models currently predict it will dissipate. However, our forecast analysis suggests a different path: it is moving West-North-West at 13 km/h and could reach our vicinity around January 5-7, potentially regenerating into a strong cyclone. While dry air is currently hindering it, conditions may become favorable for intensification as it enters our zone of responsibility.

Have a wonderful day!
