December 18, 2025. Today, the island is waking up to a much more dynamic atmosphere than we have seen in recent days. A powerful anticyclone passing to the south of our region is currently driving the weather patterns, creating active and somewhat rough conditions. The weather today will be characterized by gusty winds and frequent gray skies, a stark contrast to the calm tropical summer days we enjoy. It is certainly a day to be prepared for rapid changes and to keep your rain gear close at hand.
The forecast for today suggests a busy timeline for the elements. Early risers on the Central Plateau likely faced rain showers around 5:00 AM. After a brief lull, a substantial band of clouds began crossing the island at 6:30 AM. This system is expected to influence the weather across a large part of the country until roughly 9:30 AM, likely making the morning commute wet and slow. Even after this main cloud mass moves away, the general outlook remains “mossade”—a local term for gloomy and unsettled weather. Passing clouds will continue to bring showers throughout the day. In high-ground areas such as Grand Bassin, Rose Belle, and Curepipe, the rainfall accumulation could reach up to 25mm over the next 24 hours.
The wind is a dominant factor in today’s weather story. We are experiencing strong trade winds blowing from the East at an average speed of 36 km/h. However, it is the gusts that require attention, as they could reach speeds of up to 68 km/h in exposed areas. Despite the wind and rain, the temperature remains warm. Riviere Noire is expected to reach a high of 32°C, while other coastal regions will hover around 30°C.
Sea conditions are rough and generally unsafe for any maritime activities. The strong winds have whipped up the ocean, particularly in the East and South, where waves are reaching heights of 2.5 meters. In the North, the sea is also agitated. The weather makes it advisable to avoid swimming or boating in these regions today.
Over on Rodrigues, the weather follows a slightly different pattern. While they might experience some rain between 7:00 AM and 8:00 AM, the rest of the day is expected to be sunny until the evening. However, the wind there is even stronger, averaging 38 km/h, and the sea is very rough with waves nearing 3 meters.
In summary, the weather today demands respect for the elements. Whether you are driving or planning your day, stay safe and dry.
